Let me start by saying I don’t normally read non-fiction because they don’t appeal to me as much as fiction does but this book, a non fiction, is now one of my top favourite books EVER. Let me explain why.

Lori Gotlieb is an american psychotherapist and now a New York time bestselling author. Her book “Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed” dives into many different subjects and emotions. From talking about love and hate to life and death Lori tells us not only her story but the story, her struggles and goals but she also dives into the intricate things that make up each characters that sits on her counselling chair.
As someone who has see many different sides of therapy and psychology, being the one who once needed outside support and then going on to study then work in the mental health field i found this book to be extremely eye opening. Her way of telling stories her raw and true. Gotlieb holds nothing back. She tells us about the beautiful just as much as tells about the ugly things in life.
Lori first tells us about her life path, about how she came to the decision of pursuing psychology. We see the struggles and hard decisions she went through to finally be where she is today. Eventually we meet her clients, each of them are struggling with very different problems and issues, they all come from various background and all have different outlooks and perspectives on life.
What I loved the most about Maybe You Should Talk To Someone is that it is real. Nothing cheesy and no romanticizing of mental illnesses and trauma. It spoke to me on so many levels and made me realize how much we constrict ourselves and destroy our own happiness sometimes.
It is a book I personally believe everyone would benefit from reading. The only downside I have to say (and I only realized after reading other reviews) is that race, ethnicity and other marginalized communities are not discussed a lot in the book. After realising the fact, I do wish it would have been a subject covered by the author.
If you are looking for a life changing book that will give you a new perspective on your life I highly suggest picking up Maybe You Should Talk To Someone. Wether you pick the audiobook or a physical copy, I think it will not disappoint, I for sure, will be rereading this one a few more times.
Please tell me if you’ve read this book or if you plan on reading it and what your thoughts and opinions about it are because i would like to know!
