favourite book of 2022 – i’m glad my mom died – review

Another 12 months have come and gone, 2022 is almost over and what better way to end the year then to review my favourite of 2022! Of course, this title is given to a book that probably made its way up on the list of best books of the year of many; I’m Glad my Mom Died by former child actor, Jennette McCurdy.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

“I’m glad my mom died” by Jenette McCurdy is a memoir that follows Jennette as she enters the world of acting at six years old. Jennette discusses the abuse, manipulation and neglect she survived at the hands of her mother and within the industry.

The story is heartbreaking yet funny at times. Jennette’s narration is raw and true, she doesn’t waver from the ugly truth of the situations she was put in as a young child growing up in a world that didn’t know how to protect her.

Jennette's book is the kind of book that shapes me into, not only the reader i am, but into the person i am and the outlook i have on life.

I have so much respect and admiration for someone who can make you laugh, cry and catch your breath all within one chapter. Jennette put herself in such a vulnerable position sharing her story with the entire world. For people who have lived similar experiences, it is so refreshing to see someone talk about those traumatic experiences in a way that makes you feel seen and heard.

Honestly, this book is such a hard-hitter, it deals with triggering subjects, left me crying at times, left me needing to stop reading for a little while and gather myself before continuing. It is triggering, scary and real but it is such an important book. I felt so connected to Jennette while reading her story, I could see so many similarities between her and myself and between both our childhood and because of that I am 100% biased when it comes to reviewing this book but nonetheless, it holds a very important place in my heart and I will always recommend it to other readers.

I read this book through audiobook and I think it was the perfect way to engage with this story for the first time since Jennette herself narrates the story. It was such a powerful experience to listen to Jennette herself tell us the story of her life. She talked about her struggles with mental health, addiction, OCD and eating disorders and how everything she went through impacted her on the long run and how she is healing from it all at her own pace.

Overall, this was such a great experience, I know I will keep reading this book over and over for as long as I can and will be on the lookout for anything and everything Jenette does in the future. If you’ve been thinking about picking up this book, this is your sign to do so, just be mindful of the triggering subjects discussed throughout the entire story.
