Into Darkness – trilogy review & discussion (spoiler-free)

Hello 👋 i hope all is good for you readers out there! Are we all getting over our readings slumps? It feels like the in between winter and spring is always the worst time of the year for reading, every one i know is in a reading slump or getting out of one. If you’re stuck in one, fear not, I have the perfect trilogy for you; Into Darkness by Navessa Allen

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you have probably seen these books online at some point in the past years. Especially the first one; Lights Out. The 3 books follow 3 different couples, each whom are background characters in each book as well. For many, these books opened up the world of dark romance in litterature which is now one of, if not the most popular genre in books at the moment, especially on booktok. I personally would describe them as entry-level dark romance. They’re spicy, funny, and not quite as dark as some other books out there which is perfect if you are new to the genre or aren’t interested in the darkest of dark romance. I read all 3 of them, including the last one ‘Game On’ which just came out a few weeks ago and I absolutely loved them all so let’s talk about them!

Lights out

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

I read Lights Out after seeing a TikTok about that *one* scene (if you know, you know). I bought it on my Kindle immediately and devoured the whole book in maybe two or three days, tops and I absolutely loved it.

The chemistry between our two main characters Ally and Josh is what hooked me from the beginning. Their banter will have you giggling and kicking your feet because you just love them that much.

This book isn’t for everyone, but if you like morally grey characters, unhinged characters that still feel real, funny banter and addictive spicy scenes, this one delivers.

Caught Up is definitely a book that lives rent-free in your head after you finished it. Right before posting this review I went in and listened to the audiobook for my second read and and this is one I actually recommend experiencing in audio from the start.

Caught Up

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I had really high hopes for Caught Up, and like a lot of other readers, it ended up being my least favourite of the trilogy. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it, because I did, but it just fell a little short for me compared to Lights Out.

After reading a bunch of reviews online, I realized I wasn’t alone in feeling this way. There’s still plenty here to like; the writing, especially the realness of the dialogues, the tension between the main characters Lauren and Nico, and the spicy scenes definitely keeps you turning the pages, but something about this one didn’t hit with the same intensity.

It’s still a good read, especially if you’re invested in the series, but don’t go in expecting the same level of addictiveness (is that even a word?) that Lights Out gave.

Game On

Rating: 4 out of 5.

After reading book two, I was a bit apprehensive about book three. I really wanted to love it as much as I loved the first one, and I’m happy to report that, even though Lights Out is still my favourite, I genuinely really enjoyed my time reading this one.

Again, just like the first two books, the tension, banter and relationship between the main characters is what kept me on the hedge of my seat while reading this book. We follow Stella and Tyler, a classic enemy to lovers duo and if you know me, you know enemies to lovers is my favourite dynamic ever and Game On just does it perfectly.

I listened to the audiobook, so I’m not sure if the digital or physical versions include the extra chapters, but the audiobook had bonus content that made the experience even better. One of those chapters is from the POV of Fred, Ally’s cat from the first book, and I LOVED it. Honestly, I would read an entire book told through Fred’s perspective. Navessa Allen gave him the sassiest, bougiest personality and it fits him so perfectly. His narration of the first few scenes from the first book is hilarious and I highly recommend reading them whether they are only included in the audiobook or not.
